New guide launched to help platform workers with vehicle rental

A guide to help platform workers understand what to look for when renting vehicles is now available. The guide also includes information on what to do when involved in an accident.

NTUC Freelancers and Self-Employed Unit (U FSE) launched the Guide on Interpreting Vehicle Leasing Agreements on 2 September 2024 at Orchid Country Club.

U FSE collaborated with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Enterprise Singapore (ESG) to develop the guide. It helps platform workers understand leasing terms, allowing them to make informed decisions and negotiate better deals.

The guide covers key areas such as insurance, termination clauses, and dispute resolution to help drivers avoid pitfalls and understand their rights.

Additionally, the guide also offers practical advice for situations like vehicle inspections and accidents.

NTUC U FSE Director Jean See shared that as platform work evolves, NTUC remains committed to “developing innovative resources” that will help its members.

“The guide is a significant step in empowering platform workers who rely on leased vehicles with the knowledge to make informed decisions and protect their interests when entering into leasing agreements,” she said.

U FSE added that the guide directly benefits members of the NTUC-affiliated associations, namely the National Taxi Association (NTA), the National Private Hire Vehicles Association (NPHVA) and the National Delivery Champions Association (NDCA).

Dialogue on vehicle rental

Meanwhile, NTUC LawWorks – a collaboration between NTUC and Pro Bono SG – hosted a dialogue today to mark the guide’s launch.

NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Patrick Tay and Bozy Lu, Partner at Han & Lu Law Chambers LLP, led the dialogue.

Held at Orchid Country Club, the event offered practical solutions for platform workers renting vehicles, covering fair contract terms and insurance tiers, and deepening understanding of the vehicle leasing market.

NTUC hopes that providing such resources, it will strengthen the support mechanisms that meet the evolving needs of Singapore’s workforce.
